ABOUT PUSPICS UGM
PUSPICS was established in 1976 as a forum for cooperation between the National Survey and Mapping Coordinating Board (Bakosurtanal) and the Faculty of Geography UGM. The pioneer in establishing PUSPICS was Prof. Dr. Sutanto with direct support from Prof. Kardono Darmoyuwono, dean of the Faculty of Geography UGM and the Deputy for Natural Resources Survey at Bakosurtanal. Before that, Prof. Dr. Sutanto has headed the Aerial Portrait Interpretation Section at the Faculty of Geography and was the first person in this faculty to receive remote sensing education at ITC Delft, Netherlands in 1970.
PUSPICS was initially tasked with providing education and training in the field of surveying and mapping, particularly remote sensing, as well as integrated surveys. Course participants come from various institutions in Indonesia, both private and public, practitioners or lecturers. In 1979, the Department of Remote Sensing (S1) was established and received full support from PUSPICS. In 1983 the Postgraduate Program in Remote Sensing followed, and all of its activities were centered in the PUSPICS environment, just like the S1 program. In the course of time, the Department of Remote Sensing was merged with the Department of Cartography to become the Department of Engineering Geography (1985-1993), and later became the Department of Cartography and Remote Sensing (1993-2005), where remote sensing became one of the interests of study; and starting 2006 the Cartography and Remote Sensing Study Program became part of the Department of Geographic Information Science and Regional Development. The changes that occurred during that time did not change the position of PUSPICS as the heart of the activities of lecturers and students in Remote Sensing and GIS.
In the last 20 years, PUSPICS has also been entrusted with assisting Bakosurtanal in providing training to mapping survey staff from various developing countries, from Azerbaijan on the borders of Eastern Europe to Fiji in the South Pacific, and from the Maldives in the Indian Ocean to Mongolia in the North. This engagement has strengthened PUSPICS’ status as one of the national centers and even the Regional Center for Education and Training in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. At this time, when various fields of spatial studies began to condense into a new field of study called geographic information science (GISc), PUSPICS also tried to increase the relevance of its presence by providing training in the field of GIS, GPS and other mapping fields such as digital mapping. Apart from providing training, PUSPICS also has a long history of collaborative research. Cooperation with Bakosurtanal is of course one of the most prominent activities, in addition to collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN), Ministry of Transmigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, various provincial and municipal and district Bappeda. Many foreign collaborations have been carried out, for example with the World Bank, the Netherlands ITC, the European Community, and Australia
